Their motivations range from deeply personal to seeking fame and fortune. Regardless, they offer something different for followers than the usual climb, which is sad on some level.<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ve always felt that if you are qualified and have earned the right to be on Everest, you should be applauded, regardless of your result. No matter what you read, Everest is not a walk-up; it hard, and people die. With that, let&#8217;s look at a few climbers with unique stories.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Big Picture<\/h2>\r\n<p>Teams are arriving in Kathmandu and some like IMG are already on the trek to EBC. Other teams are en route to Kathmandu to get their permits. Thus far no reports of any issues, including any health restrictions.<\/p>\r\n<p>Most of the climbing action is on the other 8000-meters peaks. Imagine Nepal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/climbermingma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> they have established Camp 2and made a drop to 3 on Dhaulagiri.<\/p>\r\n<h1>Climbers to Watch<\/h1>\r\n<h2>The 8000ers<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong><a id=\"js_z5\" class=\"profileLink\" title=\"Carlos Soria Font\u00e1n\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/carlos.soriafontan\">Carlos Soria Font\u00e1n,<\/a> <\/strong>leads my list. The\u00a083-year-old, yes 83!!! is back for his 13<sup>th<\/sup> attempt on the 8,167-meter <span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><strong>Dhaulagiri<\/strong>. His goal is to summit all 14 of the 8000ers and has Dhaula and Shishapangma left. \u00a0He says he will stay in Asia after Dhaul to attempt Shis if he succeeds.\u00a0<\/span>Carlos&#8217;s sorted affair with the dazzling, white, beautiful mountain began at age 59 in 1998:<\/p>\r\n<table class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"height: 558px; Wilco was on K2 in 2008 when 11 climbers died after ice serac released and cut the fixed ropes. Wilco was stranded above 8000 meters for three days and two nights. He was eventually rescued by Cas and <a title=\"National Geographic Adventure (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Geographic_Adventure_(magazine)#Adventurer_of_the_Year\">Pemba Gyalje<\/a>, who was named one of the National Geographic\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/adventure\/article\/pemba-gyalje-sherpa-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adventurers of the Year<\/a>\u00a0in 2008.\u00a0Wilco has completed the\u00a0<span class=\"\">Explorers Grand Slam<\/span><span class=\"\"> which is reaching the North and South Poles and the Seven Summits. He has two 8000er summits, Everest and Cho Oyu, both sans O&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Adrian Ballinger,<\/strong> co-founder of <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/alpenglowexpeditions.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alpenglow<\/a><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has a team on <strong>Makalu<\/strong>, the highly technical 8485-meter peak. Should be fun to follow since Adrian is always entertaining, and impressive!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><span class=\"\">Sophie Lavaud,<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\"> Swiss\/French\/Candian is on a mission to complete the 8000ers. She is on <strong>Lhotse<\/strong> this year, only needs Nanga Parbat to complete her dream. She would be the first French National to summit all 14. You can see more information on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sophielavaud.com\/expeditions\/#next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mountexpeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Gupta<\/a><\/strong> is taking a break from 8000ers after guiding on <span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><strong>Kangchenjunga<\/strong> this Spring. He told me, <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/span>Almost certainly my last big 8000er for the next 4 years as I\u2019m starting the IFMGA guides scheme in June.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&#8221; Last year, he guided British climber Rebecca \u2018Becks\u2019 Ferry on six climbs of 8000-meter mountains in one year.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>The South Korean <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hongs-expedition.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hong Sun-Taek<\/a><\/strong> returns for another attempt on the very dangerous and difficult South Face of <strong>Lhotse<\/strong>. He previously tried in 1999, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019. There have been other flights from the summit using a paraglider. In 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Travel\/paragliding-everests-peak-kayaking-indian-ocean\/story?id=21097292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanobabu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tshiri Sherpa<\/a> flew from the summit to Namche Bazzar in just 42 minutes covering 15 miles. But their trip had just started in many ways as they continued with a 500-mile kayaking trip on the Ganges River to the Indian Ocean.\u00a0They were named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/adventure\/article\/peoples-choice-lakpa-tsheri-sherpa-sano-babu-sunuwar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Geographic Adventurers of the Year<\/a> award. It&#8217;s was an amazing feat!<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Amazingly, there is another flyer on Everest this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7summits7flights.co.za\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pierre Carter<\/a> who has only Everest and Vision left to complete his project to paraglide of the top of all Seven Summits. The 56-year-old from South Africa summited Denali, but NPS regulations prohibited him from flying off the summit. He says he has a 10% chance of having the proper conditions to make the flight. We&#8217;ll be following!<\/p>\r\n<p>See this article in <a href=\"https:\/\/xcmag.com\/news\/60-years-of-everest-paragliding-and-hang-gliding-on-the-worlds-highest-peak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cross Country<\/a> for a nice overview of 60 years of paragliding from mountain summits.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Youth<\/h2>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianabrownlee.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Adrianna Brownlee<\/strong><\/a> at 21 wants to do multiple peaks this spring starting with Annapurna then\u00a0Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. The Himalayan Database shows she summited Everest and attempted Lhotse last year but turned back on Lhotse due to dangerous conditions. However, on her website, she claims summits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUUvrcFjnbc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manaslu<\/a>\u00a0(fore summit pic on IG),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUwec3XDphm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dhaulagiri<\/a>\u00a0(summit pic on IG) also in 2021. She was on the 2021\/22 Winter K2 climb but left without a summit attempt. She says, &#8220;My aim is to become the youngest person to complete all 14 8000m peaks. The current record is 30 years 166 days, held by Mingma &#8220;David&#8221; Gyabu Sherpa, an absolute legend with whom I got to climb on both K2 and Everest. My plan would be to summit all 14 in 3-4 years meaning I would be 23 years old when I complete my mission.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>Similar to Adrianna, Tawainese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gracetseng_taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Grace Tseng<\/strong><\/a>, 28, also on Annapurna, is supported by very large and strong Sherpa teams.<\/p>\r\n<p>This style of climbing 8000ers is attracting many critics due to the lack of experience, independence, and use of massive Sherpa support on commercial routes. Brownlee is with Nepali outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteexpeditions.com\/\">Elite Expeditions<\/a> and Tseng with Nepali guide <span class=\"nc684nl6\"><a class=\"oajrlxb2 g5ia77u1 qu0x051f esr5mh6w e9989ue4 r7d6kgcz rq0escxv nhd2j8a9 nc684nl6 p7hjln8o kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x jb3vyjys rz4wbd8a qt6c0cv9 a8nywdso i1ao9s8h esuyzwwr f1sip0of lzcic4wl gpro0wi8 oo9gr5id lrazzd5p\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dolmaoutdoor\/?__cft__[0]=AZWd-QGnn3Kl6hlhxut-BfesVCFADmL4GM6mKFVr_JnTuMItKFYJLp9iEXc_rIVpA6bcXu7nEF4oxrCocLT5P_tWbvCsUNSDej6HJqhWTSTUnXNfjVX2AazgtNgl8bng61t5_BNJrixX9WcI_lYX-NJElFoHdOZ9Ldi0lGf9yx6xig&amp;__tn__=-UC%2CP-y-R\"><strong>Dolma Outdoor Expedition<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Another young 8000er aspirant is Pakistani <strong>Shehroze Kashif<\/strong> targeting to become the youngest of all 14. He has a good start with\u00a0Broad Peak at 17 and Everest at 19. This spring he has\u00a0Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu in his sights. He climbs relatively independently and is with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sst8848\">Seven Summits Treks<\/a> this year. He updates his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thebroadboy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IG<\/a> page often.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Unique<\/h2>\r\n<p>A team I&#8217;m excited to follow is the <a href=\"https:\/\/fullcircleeverest.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Circle Everest<\/a> team. They hope to make history as the first Black climbing team to attempt to summit Everest. As of late 2021, there have been 10,184 summits but only eight Black climbers have stood on the top. I did a <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p5LUlU-ap7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Podcast<\/a> with the team where we talk about their dreams and challenges and their &#8216;why.&#8217;\u00a0You can follow their progress on their site at <a href=\"https:\/\/fullcircleeverest.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Circle Everest<\/a>\u00a0and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fullcircleeverest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Disabilities<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>Andrea Lanfri, <\/strong>35, from Lucca, Italy, wants to make a point. In 2015, he contracted\u00a0fulminant meningococcal septicemia that resulted in the amputation of\u00a0both legs and seven fingers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetmountain.com\/en\/news\/interviews\/andrea-lanfri-and-his-everest-objective.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planet Mountain<\/a> has a nice interview with Andrea.<\/p>\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another climber with a disability is Canadian mountaineer,\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/mountainsofmymind.com\/vision-8000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jill Wheatley<\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>,<\/strong> who hopes to summit all fourteen of the 8000ers to break down the stigma associated with traumatic brain injury, vision loss, and eating disorders. She is on\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dhaulagiri\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with the Nepali company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/climbermingma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagine Nepal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>From Nepal is a vision-impaired climber<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/everest017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amit KC<\/a> <\/strong>for<strong> Everest.<\/strong>\u00a0He reached the South Col in 2017 before poor weather forced him back. He is back this year. \u00a0He has climbed three 6,000ers Island Peak (6,160 m), Mera Peak (6,476 m), and Lobuche Peak (6,119 m). You may remember that the Ministry of Tourism banned all people with disabilities from climbing Everest, but Nepal&#8217;s Supreme Court later overturned the ban in June 2018. I wrote about it then in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/06\/nepal-to-ban-everest-climbers-with-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Records<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>Maya Sherpa<\/strong> is on track to set a female Everest record with ten if\/when she summits this spring. Her first summit was in 2000 at age 26, now she is 48.<\/p>\r\n<p>And then we have<strong> Kami Rita Sherpa<\/strong>, 52, looking to get his staggering 26<sup>th <\/sup>Everest summit, clearly a record. He will be on the rope fixing team and potentially guide clients for his 27<sup>th. <\/sup>At one point he said he was content to end his career but now he says as long as his body lets him, he will climb. He is an impressive person. I was honored to be with him on K2 in 2014, where he and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/22\/everest-2014-relationship-sherpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kami Sherpa (Ang Chhiring Sherpa \u2013 Pangboche)<\/a> were instrumental in our summit. He works for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sst8848\">Seven Summits Treks<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Brit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentoncool.com\/everest-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kenton Cool<\/strong><\/a> is out to set a non-Sherpa Everest summit record of 16 passing American Dave Hahn who has held it for what seems like forever. He completed the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/outdoor-adventure\/climbing\/full-story-kenton-cool-and-triple-crown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Triple Crown<\/a> in 2013 with Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. I wrote about it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/outdoor-adventure\/climbing\/full-story-kenton-cool-and-triple-crown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outside<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>No Os<\/h2>\r\n<p>There seem to be more people than usual attempting Everest without supplemental oxygen. An interesting profile is of <span class=\"nc684nl6\"><a class=\"oajrlxb2 g5ia77u1 qu0x051f esr5mh6w e9989ue4 r7d6kgcz rq0escxv nhd2j8a9 nc684nl6 p7hjln8o kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x jb3vyjys rz4wbd8a qt6c0cv9 a8nywdso i1ao9s8h esuyzwwr f1sip0of lzcic4wl gpro0wi8 oo9gr5id lrazzd5p\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marina.cortes?__cft__[0]=AZWnNW-WYITWYZHP2zh5Pa3V3JY-71WuDQ5SClTAgcsn5w1zhFQi4T84LTBtvGDI_gWPSCsZtHsK3YWE9y6ZS52seQYsAdTmUSlsaCdhk-fmCSZ7mupEZvcSJ1qM-nv5To0&amp;__tn__=-UC%2CP-R\"><strong>Marina Cortes<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who uses these words to describe herself as an &#8220;Astrophysicist, ballet dancer, Himalayan mountaineer (eight-thousander).&#8221; She has a summit of Cho Oyu in \u00a02014. She is with the <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nepali company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/climbermingma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagine Nepal<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Ireland is always proud, rightfully so, of its climbers. This year <strong>James Mcmanus<\/strong>\u00a0from County Tipperary located between Cork and Dublin is making a no O&#8217;s attempt and if successful would be the first Irish on top without using supplementary oxygen.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marc.batard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Marc Batard<\/strong><\/a>, at age 70 is not only making a no O&#8217;s attempt but also trying to prove his alternate route from the Khumbu Icefall along the flanks of Nuptse. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p5LUlU-7oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written<\/a> quite a bit about this.<\/p>\r\n<h3>&#8220;Interesting?&#8221;<\/h3>\r\n<p>Finally, in the &#8216;interesting&#8217; category is <strong>Omnika Dangol<\/strong> who is seeking notoriety and influence by being the first crew member from Himalayan Airlines to summit Everest. Her preparation included climbs on Mera, Island, and Lobuche. She is with the Nepali guide company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thamserkutrekking.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thamserku Trekking.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<h2>Nepal Permit Update<\/h2>\r\n<p>The permits for Everest are coming extremely slow as expected. I&#8217;m looking for 300 total, but at this rate, I may reduce it even more. 2021 was a record year with 408 permits issued to foreigners.
