In spite of fears and rumors of delays, we left Punta Arenas about on time late Saturday afternoon. The four hour flight on the huge Russian jet was comfortable albeit noisy but earplugs helped.<\/p>\n

We landed around midnight on the 3 mile blue ice runway; an amazing feat of logistics. The big jet hurled for what seemed like forever with the four engines screaming as we slowed to a stop.<\/p>\n

I will write a proper report later but the flight was only upstaged by stepping foot onto the Antarctic continent.<\/p>\n

The runway and Union Glacier camp are surrounded by the Elseworth mountains – all rising sharply from the pure white ice and snow of the Bascomb glacier. Looks like our fortune with schedules continue as our brief flight to Vinson Base Camp is this afternoon.<\/p>\n

OK more later but the first of the seven is underway!<\/p>\n
