The actual issue is a large-scale insurance fraud scheme targeting trekkers (not climbers) across Nepal&#8217;s trekking circuits, involving fake helicopter evacuations and hospital stays. Additionally, Global Rescue will not provide longline rescues above Camp 2 this year due to a lack of qualified pilots, which will fundamentally change expectations for climber safety. \u00a0We also look at heavy snow delaying summits on Annapurna and, of course, a status update on Ryan Mitchell.<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>Big Picture<\/h2>\n<p>Most Everest climbers have not left home yet, but those already in Nepal are trekking to base camp, enjoying the beauty of the Khumbu. Traditionally, climbers arrive at EBC around April 15, but this date has steadily slipped over the last five years as expeditions have become shorter due to pre-acclimatization techniques at home. Some will arrive around the last week of April. In any event, many acclimate on Lobuche East before arriving at EBC, and once there, use Pumori High Camp for a nice day hike to adjust to the thinner air.<\/p>\n<h2>Ryan Mitchell Update<\/h2>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ryanmitchellyt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan Mitchell<\/a>, 21, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/justin.sackett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Sacket<\/a>, 28, will attempt a no O&#8217;s climb with limited Sherpa support (a couple carrying emergency oxygen) on Nepal&#8217;s Southeast Ridge normal route. Ryan summited Everest with Madison Mountaineering in 2024 and was unsuccessful on K2 last year due to treacherous rockfall conditions that resulted in the death of one climber. Justin, a professional mountain guide and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skylinemountainguides.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyline Mountain Guides<\/a>, has a personal altitude of 6,812 meters (22,349 ft) on Nepal&#8217;s Ama Dablam.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>They continue to acclimate for their no Os Everest\/Lhotse attempt. They just summited Lobuche East, a common step for nearly all Everest climbers nowadays. On April 4, 2026, Ryan sent me this message from his inReach: &#8220;Thanks, coach! Acclimating at Pumori High Camp right now!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>You callow them on the social media at:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stories\/ryanmitchellyt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan&#8217;s Instagram stories<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ryanmitchellyt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan&#8217;s Instagram<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/justin.sackett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin&#8217;s Instagram<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<h2>Other 8000ers<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>Teams are on Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. However, unlike last year when conditions were unusually dry, they are experiencing heavy snow and even rain. I received a message from a friend, Paul, on Annapurna discussing the delays due to heavy snow:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Everyone is back at base camp now. Some teams spent one or two nights at C3 before coming down. Last night, we had about 8 inches of snow at BC, and it\u2019s expected to keep falling for the next 6-7 days. Some teams have gone back down to Tatopani or Pokhara for more comfort. We\u2019re staying at BC. On the night of April 2nd, there was a massive avalanche coming off the western side of the valley, narrowly missing C1 and completely wiping out the route from BC to C1. Luckily, it happened around 8pm, and no one was on the route, or it would have been devastating.
