{"id":75,"date":"2008-04-06T15:24:56","date_gmt":"2008-04-06T21:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=75"},"modified":"2016-05-27T13:35:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T19:35:28","slug":"a-fathers-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/blog\/2008\/04\/06\/a-fathers-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"A Father&#039;s Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The email read in part &#8220;can you see if his memorial is still there?&#8221; The trek to Base Camp takes you through 30 or more stone memorials built to honor climbers who have died on Everest.<br \/>\nThis email was from the 80 year-old Father of such a climber.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/dispatches\/live\/images\/view.JPG\"\/><br \/>\nThe clouds moved out overnight and we were greeted with stunning views of Ama Dablam,     Lhotse and more. The trek to the next village was only a few hours but it was the Father&#8217;s request that was on my mind.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/dispatches\/live\/images\/memoriallrow.JPG\"\/><br \/>\nAs I made the hill crest,   <\/a>  a row of monuments came into view. I took off my pack and started my search. Many of the monuments had new bronze name plates. Most had worn away after years of wind and rain.<br \/>\nSome were famous &#8211;  Scott Fischer, Babu Chiri. Most were not familiar. Names long since forgotten by the climbing community. Names remembered daily by their families.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alanarnette.com\/dispatches\/live\/images\/memorial.JPG\"\/><br \/>\nI stopped at each one. How did they die? Weather, health, accident? It did not matter.<br \/>\nThere were climbers from many countries: Belirous, Japan, Austria, Canada, Nepal. Most were Sherpa. Most were young.<br \/>\nClimbers following their passion. Chasing their dream. Doing a job. It did not matter.<br \/>\nThe setting was perfect &#8211; above the treeline &#8211; on the alpine tundra &#8211; views of mountains. They would have liked it.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sorry Sir. I never found Greg&#8217;s memorial.
