Huayna Potosi
19,974' - 6088m |
In July 2019, I attempted three peaks in Bolivia: Pequeno Alpamayo (17,749 ft / 5,410 m.), Huayna Potosi (19,974-feet/6,088-meter) and Illimani (21,122 ft / 6438 m). Due to weather and a throat infection I only reach Tarija at 17,400' just beside Pequeno Alpamayo and turned back around 17,500' on Huayna Potosi after getting sick. I didn't attempt Illimani. |

Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador. It is the highest peak near the equator. Chimborazo is not the highest mountain by elevation above sea level, but its location along the equatorial bulge makes its summit the farthest point on the Earth's surface from the Earth's center. We summited the close by sub peak, Pico Veintimilla at 20,433' and turned back from the main summit due to weather on January 28, 2019. |

Manaslu
26,759' -8156m |
I summited* the 8th highest peak on September 25, 2013, Manaslu at 26,759 feet 8156 meters in Nepal. The route was the most difficult in years due to a large avalanche in 2012 plus other mountain movements and a low snow year. The tiny summit was scary indeed!
* Update October 2023: With new information that most people stopped a bit short of the true summit, this is my response when asked if I summited in 2013: "I thought I did. I was told by world-record Everest Summiteer, Phurba Tashi Sherpa, that I did. He fixed the ropes that year. But I saw a couple of snow bumps behind me and always wondered. Anyway, it really doesn't;t matter to me if I touched the precise tippy-top or not. I climbed with a great team, made wonderful lifelong friends and was encouraged during that climb to attempt K2, which I then summited (true!) the next year on my 58th birthday. So I call Manaslu a success." |

I returned to Everest in 2008, to attempt the South side again as part of The Road Back to Mt. Everest . I had trained hard with four previous high altitude climbs in the prior 8 months. I felt great the majority of the climb but felt it was too dangerous for me to continue and turned back at the Balcony or 27,500' (8300m) which was 1535 ' short of the highest point on earth. This was my highest altitude ever reached. I have written an extensive document on the experiences during this climb as impacted by the Chinese Olympic torch summit and closure of the north and heavy restrictions on the south side. The highest peak in Colorado yet not difficult at all, just a long day. |

I have summited Longs 42 times, most recently in July 2016. |

My local 14er, Longs Peak serves as a great training climb throughout the year. There are many routes ranging from moderate to extremely technical. It almost killed me in 1992 but is a nice day climb today!
I have climbed on Longs over 150 times, summited 42 via the Northwest Couloir, Cables (North Face), Lamb's Slide, Loft and Keyhole routes. |
