Autumn 2025: Dire Weather for Himalays Ahead, Everest NF Ski Descent Film Teaser

Jim Morrison on Everest North Face
Authorities and meteorologists are issuing dire warnings for climbers and trekkers in Nepal’s Himalayas. Seizing the opportunity to pre-market the documentary of Jim Morrison’s legendary ski descent down Everest’s North Face, National Geographic released a short teaser revealing the scale and courage it took to complete this feat. A Russian team opens a new route on Manaslu.

Storm Warning

A major storm is expected to hit the Everest region, including Ama Dablam, the Annapurna Circuit and more, during peak Autumn trekking and climbing season. Peaks impacted include Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Everest, Mera Peak, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Expect 2 feet of snow on October 30-31, 2025. More details from meteorologist Chris Tomer:

Successful Everest Ski Descent Film Teaser

Jim Morrison, 50, successfully skied from the summit down the Hornbein Couloir on the north face of Everest. This had been a long-time dream for Morrison, but also to honor his late partner, Hilaree Nelson, who died tragically in 2022 on Nepal’s Manaslu after they summited together. Morrison dedicated the record-breaking achievement to her.

He was supported by a massive team including Erich Roepke, Pemba Sharwa Sherpa, Esteban “Topo” Mena, Carla Perez, Roberto “Tico” Morales, Pur Bahadur “Yukta” Gurung, Ngima Tenjing Sherpa, Pemba Gelje Sherpa, Tenging Gyaljen Sherpa and Pasang Sona Sherpa.

Through interviews, more is coming out about how Morrison skied 3,650 meters down the Hornbein and Japanese Couloirs to the Rongbuk Glacier. He mentioned difficult conditions on the Hornbein, which is up to 60º steep. A rocky section forced him to rappel part of the descent.

Sponsored by The North Face and National Geographic, filmmaker Jimmy Chin, with others on the team, documented the descent and will release a documentary. NatGeo has a long, detailed article on the descent and released this teaser for the documentary:

New Manaslu Route

For the first time since 2006, when Denis Urubko and Sergei Samoilov climbed through the Northeast Face of Manaslu, a new route has been sent on Manaslu, 8,163m.

According to Anna Piunova from the Russian mountaineering portal mountain.ru, Andrey Vasilyev, Sergey Kondrashkin, Natalia Belyankina, Kirill Eyserman, and Vitaly Shipilov reached the summit of the 8,163-meter-high Manaslu in western Nepal on October 22, 2025.

Seven Summits Age Record

American Art Muir set a 7 Summits age record (unverified) when he summited Puncak Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid on the island of New Guinea, with an elevation of 4,884 m (16,024 ft) with Madison Mountaineering. Art is the oldest American to summit Mount Everest, at age 75, on May 23, 2021. Also summitting was Norwegian climbing legend Kristin Harlia, who was on the Madison team. Kristin is known for climbing all fourteen 8000ers in 92 days in 2023.

Rescue on Mt. Washington

Just so you know that all the drama doesn’t occur in the Himalaya or Alps, an “unprepared ” team of 20 hikers needed rescuing on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington after they were trapped in “full winter conditions” without the proper gear, with some developing hypothermia. Even though Washington is low by other standards at 6,288 feet, it has recorded some of the highest winds on earth and can be deadly in winter conditions. Park officials said Saturday temperatures reached roughly 15 to 18 degrees near the summit, with a wind chill between minus five and zero degrees. The hikers were taken down on the cog railway.

Safe climbing to all.

Climb On!
