- 6th leading cause of death in the United States — deaths have risen 134% since 2000, while deaths from heart disease and stroke have declined
- 55+ million people worldwide are affected — and no easy, affordable method of early detection exists
- Annual care costs in the US alone exceed $412 billion — borne largely by families
