Autumn 2025: Stranded Tourists, Manaslu Summits and More

Stranded Trekkers in Tibet October 2025
Somewhat surprisingly for this time of year, a massive snowstorm hit Southern Tibet, stranding tourists but not climbers. However, one climber died on a Nepal trekking peak. The storm moved on, allowing climbers to continue. Prior to the storm, excellent weather enabled hundreds of Manslu summit and nice progress on the other peaks. There is a ski attempt on the north side of Everest.

Stranded Tourists (not climbers) near Everest (not on Everest)

The mainstream media is reporting “1000 climbers stranded on Mt Everest.” This is incorrect. An intense snowstorm hit southern Tibet and central Nepal, with blizzard conditions and heavy rain causing massive flooding and landslides. Roads and bridges were washed away. More than 47 people have died in Nepal and one in Tibet. On Mera Peak, 6,476m, Korean Tejung Park, 46, died.

The people stranded are tourists hiking and trekking near the Tibetan town of Tingri, 20-30 miles north of Everest proper in the Karma (Kama) Valley. Many have been rescued, but some remain stranded, with authorities currently unable to reach them. They are not climbers, and they are not on Mt. Everest.

China Daily reported that 350 hikers were safely taken to the Qudang township, and 200 remained to be assisted.

The only people on Everest proper are (were) Jim Morrison, Jimmy Chin, several strong Sherpas, Pemba Gelje Sherpa, Pemba Ongchu Sherpa, and Yukta Gurung. They are attempting to ski down Everest’s Hornbein Couloir with the support of Nat Geo and TNF sponsorship. They are keeping a low profile, probably due to filming rights, so little is known of their condition. The last report, dated September 16, 2025, by the Tourism Times had them at Camp 2, but I’m sure a lot has changed over the past three weeks.

Everest – Ski Attempt?

As just noted, there is a ski attempt on Everest. Over was Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel, 37,  who completed the first-ever ski descent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen on September 22, and  American runner Tyler Andrews, 35, came up short on setting a no O’s Fastest Known Time (FKT) for an Everest climb.

Manaslu – MORE Summits, Over?

So far, 457 climbers from 47 expedition teams—including 347 men and 110 women—have received permits. With so many teams and good weather, there was a massive wave of summits. At least 192 members were supported by 195 Sherpas, totalling 387 summits. The five Sherpa rope team reached the summit on September 20, 2025.

Spanish climber, Carlos Soria, 86, was helicoptered off Manaslu from Camp 3 after his battered body began to fail him. He suffered a serious broken leg on Dhaulagiri in 2023 and has had knee replacements, plus other surgeries. He’s safe in Kathmandu now.

It appears the Manaslu season has ended, but you never know.

Cho Oyu – Summits & Climbing

A couple of teams summited before the storm hit, while Adventure Consultants waited out the storm at Advanced Base Camp. Madison Mountaineering was in Tingri during the storm but planning to return to continue their climb. Garrett told me on Monday, October 6, 2025, from Tingri:

“Greetings from Tingri! We’ve been here the last few days waiting out this massive snowstorm (4 feet in ABC), will head back up to ABC tomorrow if we can.”
