K2 climbers continue to stay at Base Camp stalled by the weather but Feb 4 and 5 are looking better. I chat with John Snorri at K2 BC and route progress on Manaslu.
K2 climbers continue to stay at Base Camp stalled by the weather meanwhile the five or so climbers on Nepal’s Manaslu found a huge open crevasse that will require route-finding skills to navigate. Some of the Nepali K2 10 will join the Manaslu effort.
As I covered in a recent post, Everest 2021 is coming on soon. There are questions as to whether operators should run their programs at all. Many are moving forward but a few are not. I discuss the situation with Adrian Ballinger, founder of Alpenglow Expeditions who has canceled his expedition from the Tibet side this spring. We also talk about the historic K2 Winter summit.
Climbers on winter K2 are watching the weather forecasts with anticipation, hoping a break in the winds will give them their chance. Meanwhile, with the Everest 2021 Spring season only a few weeks away, there are lingering questions about whether climbers will go, and those who are, should they. Let’s explore the issues.
Climbers are waiting for the next weather window to open. Several forecasts converge on big winds next week, yet remain mixed on favorable conditions at the end of this week.
Pakistan said it will sponsor and reward climbers. Seems everyone is at Base Camp after high winds stopped a recent attempt. Several weather forecasts agree that winds will remain high for the next ten days with this Friday as a break, but it’s too short for a summit push as Snorri and Team demonstrated.
John Snorri’s team is back at Base Camp after high winds stopped their attempt. They intend to try again in early February. High winds return now.
John Snorri’s team has gone silent but was last reported via their tracker at Camp 2 at 22,110’/6700m. We really don’t know their status but with the high winds, hope they are headed down.
John Snorri’s team is on their summit push. They planned to top out on Monday, January 25, 2021, around 9 am. But are now holding at C3 according to their home team’s social media. At least one person, Sajid Ali Sadpara is not using supplemental oxygen.
