Current Headlines

  • ‪Two #Everest2018 Sherpas were hurt when a serac collapsed towards the top of the Khumbu Icefall. One flown to Kathmandu and will recover, other treated at base camp. While the route is good this year, risks remain. ‬
  • Three years ago today, at 11:56 am April 25th, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit in Nepal taking 9,000 lives, including 19 at Everest Base Camp.
  • First round of rotations on Nepal side wrapping up – all well
  • Windy conditions reported at C1 and C2 – south
  • Teams at Advanced Base Camp on the Tibet side
  • Fixed line to Camp 3 on the Nepal side
  • Fixing ropes to North Col underway on the Tibet side

Previous Major Headlines

  • CTMA reports 150 foreign permits issued for Tibet side
  • Crash at Kathmandu airport delayed flights on 20 April. Now reopened
  • First clients through the Icefall and to Camp 1 in the Western Cwm
  • 336 for Everest including 20 Nepalis from the Nepal side
  • There is no climbing on Everest today, April 18. On this day in 2014 at 6:35 am 16 Sherpas were killed in a moment as tons of ice fell onto the route
  • Summit ropes and gear were helicoptered to C2 on Nepal side
  • Lots of crevasses in the Western Cwm, may take longer than usual from C1 to C2
  • Minor 3.2 magnitude earthquake felt in Kathmandu.
  • Icefall Doctor Sherpa hurt but not seriously
  • 7 Summits Club first team to arrive at Chinese Base Camp – Everest Tibet side

I did similar coverage for the 2004,  2005,  2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 20122013201420152016 and 2017 seasons. I summited Everest on May 21, 2011 and have attempted Everest three other times – 2002, 2003, 2008 and Lhotse in 2015 and 2016.
