K2 2021 Summer Coverage: Summit Wave #1 Underway

View of K2 Ice Serac from Camp 3. Note view of the Bottleneck is blocked.

The first K2 summit wave is underway around 22:00 PT, Monday, July 26, 2021. The lead is from Sherpas from Pioneer Adventure and Madison Mountaineering. There are many Pakistani climbers, and many friends and families following them closely. I’m not able to mention every person by name so feel free to put them in the comments.

The major teams are from Ukraine:

Shehroze Kashif’s tracker shows him at 8307-meters at 4:15 am July 27. So they are getting close and making good time considering the route was beingfixed as they climb.

The West Ridge team of Graham Zimmerman and Ian Welsted are reported to have reached 6800-meters but descending now, however, I can’t confirm that.

Gasherbrum II Summits

What could be the last of this summer’s summits on GII, Czech climbers Marek Disman and Karolina Grohova made the top all alone according to Explorersweb.

Gasherbrum I – Climbing from C4

Marco Confortola’s home team updated his progress that he was at C4 leaving for the top tonight, Monday. This will be the first summit of GI this season if successful so they are breaking the trail and fixing the route virtually alone.

Broad Peak – Another Summit Attempt

Around 20 climbers who didn’t make it to the true summit in the last push are back on Broad Peak for another try.
