Everest 2021: Should, Could, Would?

Everest April 6 2015

Climbers on winter K2 are watching the weather forecasts with anticipation, hoping a break in the winds will give them their chance. Meanwhile, with the Everest 2021 Spring season only a few weeks away, there are lingering questions about whether climbers will go, and those who are, should they. Let’s explore the issues.

Climbers are waiting for the next weather window to open. Several forecasts converge on big winds next week, yet remain mixed on favorable conditions at the end of this week.

Winter K2 Update: Climber Recognition and Reward

Pakistan said it will sponsor and reward climbers. Seems everyone is at Base Camp after high winds stopped a recent attempt. Several weather forecasts agree that winds will remain high for the next ten days with this Friday as a break, but it’s too short for a summit push as Snorri and Team demonstrated.

John Snorri’s team is back at Base Camp after high winds stopped their attempt. They intend to try again in early February. High winds return now.

John Snorri’s team has gone silent but was last reported via their tracker at Camp 2  at 22,110’/6700m. We really don’t know their status but with the high winds, hope they are headed down.

John Snorri’s team is on their summit push. They planned to top out on Monday, January 25, 2021, around 9 am. But are now holding at C3 according to their home team’s social media. At least one person, Sajid Ali Sadpara is not using supplemental oxygen.

Winter K2 Update: New Summit Push, Ropes on K2

K2 Ropes

With this wind event apparently over (they are never really over on K2!), the climbers are preparing to go back up to either finish acclimatization rotations or for their summit bids. At least one team is leaving BC today for the summit. Also, why are the ropes left on K2, and other mountains?

It’s windy out there! Winds at K2 Base Camp are gusting to over 60 mph, but should calm soon and next week looks amazingly good!

Two teams now at K2 Base Camp, Seven Summits Treks and John Snorri. Huge winds have begun keeping everyone tent bound. Will be miserable. Another member leaves. So how are they staying warm when climbing?

Climbing the World to End Alzheimer’s

I lost my mom, Ida Arnette, and four aunts to Alzheimer's. Every climb I complete is dedicated to their memory — and to ending this disease for the families who come after us. Please join me in the fight.

Read the full story of why this cause matters so deeply to me.

The facts are staggering — and they're getting worse:

- No cure. Always fatal. Every single person diagnosed will die from it.
- 7.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's today — projected to reach 13.8 million by 2060
- A new case develops every 3 seconds somewhere in the world
- 6th leading cause of death in the United States — deaths have risen 134% since 2000, while deaths from heart disease and stroke have declined
- 55+ million people worldwide are affected — and no easy, affordable method of early detection exists
- Annual care costs in the US alone exceed $412 billion — borne largely by families

Your donation directly funds research to find a cure, improve early detection, and support the millions of families who — like mine — are living through this right now.

Donate to Alzheimer's Research Today

Every dollar counts. Every summit I climb is for them.
