K2 2023 Coverage: Weekend Summits on BP and GII

It was a good weekend on Gasherbrum II and Broad Peak, with multiple summits. Teams have continued their acclimatization rotations on K2, but some of the Nanga Parbat climbers will skip any rotations and go directly on their summit push. Kristin Harla did this on GII.

K2 – Rotations

Teams are acclimatizing with ropes to C3. Sherpas are busy stocking C2 and 3 with tents, stoves, fuel and oxygen for the summit push. The summit winds look manageable through July 27, but you know about weather forecasts!

Broad Peak – 12+ summits

Horia Colibasanu made the summit after a twelve-hour push with no Os or Sherpa support. While Seven Summits Treks claimed that seven summited. Ponce de Leon Expeditions noted two summits.

Furtenbach Adventures is at C2 and will make their summit push soon. And Alpenglow is also on GII with their Rapid Ascent program.

Gasherbrum II – 3+ summits

Norwegian Kristin Harila and Tenjin (Lama) Sherpa with Mingtemba Sherpa also summited. This makes Kristin’s and Tenjin’s eleventh 8000er since their first, Shishapangma, on April 26, 2023. They are hoping to get it all in three months. The German magazine Alpin asked several well-known German climbs for their thoughts on Kristin’s project. It’s very balanced and well worth a moment to read. Use something like Google Translate for your language since it was published in German.

Gasherbrum I – to C2

On GI, which is significantly harder than II, Denis Urubko and Pipi Cardell reached Camp 2. They are said to be planning a new route.

Nanga Parbat – Over

The season appears to be over with sixty summits.

Climb On!
