Everest 2024: More Summits, More Death

Everest South Col 2003

As many as fifty people made the summit of Everest on Monday morning, May 13th. Nearby, Lhotse also saw summits. Teams arrived at the base camp on the Tibet side, while a French climber sadly lost his life on Makalu. Winds are coming, so the action will slow for a few days.

Nepal

Several teams summited Everest on Monday morning but they seem to be shy about reporting the details.

Climbing the Seven Summits had a good morning with eight clients led by two Western guides and supported by sixteen sherpas, making the client: support ratio 1:2.25

Tibet

The few teams that stayed with China are now settling into base camp on that side. The ropes are to the summit so they might take their time to acclimatize before heading up.

Other 8000ers

Johnny Saliba, 60, passed away on Sunday at around 8,120 meters while descending from Makalu’s summit. He was climbing with the Nepali company,  Snowy Horizon Treks. This is the second death on Makalu this spring and the second for he 8000er season.

Saliba was climbing with a small group led by Serge Bazin, a French mountain guide who had summited and guided Makalu before.
